Mobile and Internet Services Disappear Due to Countrywide Power Outage

A nationwide power outage is causing telecom services, including mobile and internet, to stop working across the nation.

Updates on Mobile and Internet Services Due to Countrywide Power Outage

Users may experience service interruptions owing to a nationwide power outage, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) warned in a recent update.

“Due to country wide power outage, users may face service disruptions. Cellular Mobile Operators have been instructed to inform their respective subscribers accordingly and to make optimal efforts for refueling of the gensets on maximum number of sites.”

According to PTA

It also stated that cell phone companies have been directed to inform their respective users and to use their best efforts to replenish generators at the most locations possible. The statement also mentioned how the telecom regulator is coordinating with providers to maintain services across the nation.

According to sources, power outages have also had an impact on fixed internet services in places like Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, in addition to mobile phone services.

According to sources, telecom tower power backups only last for a maximum of four hours. As a result of widespread, protracted power outages, mobile services have begun to suffer.

According to A Representative of The Telecom Sector

“Telecom networks are running on a backup power supply since the electricity breakdown early in the morning. With continued outages in different parts of the country, it is getting more challenging to keep the network up and running.”

Furthermore, the official emphasised the logistical difficulties of overseeing and refilling numerous sites at once, as well as the health and safety issues for field personnel, particularly in harsh terrains.

“Backup power and fuel are limited to a certain time frame and not for prolonged outages. Logistically managing and refueling a large number of sites simultaneously is also a challenge in such situations. There are also health and safety considerations for the field teams, particularly in hard terrains that the telecom companies have to prioritize.”

In order to restore vital services, telecom providers have requested the government to promptly restore energy supply to the sector.

The power outage has also caused several gas stations to run low on supplies, which is expected to make the problem worse.

While Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) officials claim they are gathering information on the affected telecom services, IT Ministry officials claim they have not received any complaints about the disruption of telecom services.
