Former Pakistan cricket star Mohammad Yousuf has shared his insights on the leading contenders for the upcoming Champions Trophy. While acknowledging the strength of multiple teams, he highlighted New Zealand and India as the most well-rounded squads in the competition. However, he also noted that Pakistan’s familiarity with home conditions could work in their favor.

Yousuf stopped short of naming a clear frontrunner but expressed particular admiration for New Zealand’s team composition and their adaptability to subcontinental conditions.

“It’s a major tournament where momentum is crucial. From what I see, New Zealand looks like the most balanced team,” Yousuf remarked. “They have a strong batting lineup, quality fast bowlers, and effective spinners. Their wicketkeeper contributes as an all-rounder, and they also have two spin-bowling all-rounders, making them a formidable side,” he added.

He also pointed out India’s squad depth, considering them another strong contender. Given that India will play all their matches in the UAE, Yousuf believes this could enhance their chances due to their familiarity with such surfaces.

Despite his praise for New Zealand and India, he emphasized Pakistan’s home advantage, which could be a key factor. “Playing in familiar conditions is a significant edge, but Pakistan needs to approach each game with a smart, calculated strategy,” he advised.

Addressing Pakistan’s recent struggles against spin—particularly in their loss to New Zealand in the tri-series final—Yousuf stressed the importance of strike rotation and reducing dot balls in the middle overs.

“On turning pitches, it’s vital to find gaps and keep the scoreboard moving. With five fielders inside the circle, there are always opportunities to score,” he explained.

As the Champions Trophy draws near, expert opinions continue to pour in, but the time for analysis is nearly over. The much-anticipated tournament kicks off on February 19th in Karachi, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match.
