More than 25 People Reported Dead as Wildfires Spread in Chile
ISLAMABAD, February 7, 2023- A state of emergency has been declared in the two regions as wildfires spread in Chile.
More than twenty people have been killed in Chile due to wildfires that have consumed 40,000 hectares (99,000 acres) of land. The administration has declared an emergency in Biobio and Nuble and is requesting assistance from neighboring countries. Hundreds of properties have been damaged due to the fires, which began as temperatures rose across the country.
Chile has declared an emergency as firefighters battle to contain dozens of wildfires that have already claimed the lives of at least 23 people. The provision permits the government to mobilize the military to assist with firefighting.
As local temperatures in the southern hemisphere summer hit 40C on Saturday, authorities reported that 232 wildfires were still burning, including 16 that ignited earlier in the day (104F).
Chile’s department for disaster mitigation has reported that 151 of the fires are now under control, and official data provided late Friday indicates that approximately 40,000 hectares (99,000 acres) had been destroyed. Weather conditions have made it extremely difficult to extinguish the spreading fires, and the situation is deteriorating.

At least 979 have been reported injured as a result of the fires. More than 1,100 individuals have sought sanctuary. In the village of Santa Juana in Biobio, located approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of Santiago, 11 of the victims, or roughly half of those reported slain thus far, perished.
The three impacted regions are sparsely populated and home to numerous farms, notably those that produce grapes, apples, and berries for export and vast stretches of forestland.
