At least 335 Pakistanis have lost their lives while attempting to reach Europe through illegal migration routes, commonly known as the “Dunki” route, over the past four years, according to data compiled by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The figures highlight the growing human cost of irregular migration, with the FIA documenting seven major migrant boat tragedies since June 2023.
Deadliest Boat Disaster in 2023
The most devastating incident occurred in June 2023, when a boat carrying 226 Pakistani migrants sank off the coast of Greece. Only 19 passengers survived, while 207 Pakistanis lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest migrant boat disasters involving Pakistani nationals.
More Tragedies in Greece, Morocco, and Libya
In December 2024, another boat carrying 69 Pakistani migrants on its way to Greece capsized, leaving 25 dead while 44 people were rescued.
A month later, in January 2025, a vessel carrying 70 Pakistanis overturned near Morocco.
Another major incident occurred off the coast of Libya in February 2025, involving 40 identified Pakistani migrants. According to FIA data, 23 people died, while 13 survived.
Libya Route Remains Highly Dangerous
FIA records show that three additional boat disasters linked to illegal migration from Libya occurred during 2025–26, including incidents in April 2025, October 2025, and April 2026. Together, these accidents involved 62 Pakistani migrants.
Overall, boat disasters along the Libya route claimed the lives of 48 Pakistanis, while 30 people were rescued, underscoring the continued dangers faced by those attempting irregular migration to Europe.
Authorities have repeatedly warned citizens against using illegal migration networks and urged prospective migrants to pursue legal and regulated pathways for overseas employment and travel.
