A prisoner accused of kidnapping and murdering a citizen has escaped from Malir Jail in Karachi, raising serious concerns over prison security arrangements.
The suspect, identified as Naveed alias “Polka,” was allegedly involved in the kidnapping and killing of a trader within the jurisdiction of Joharabad Police Station. He had been arrested by Joharabad police just days earlier in connection with the case.
According to officials, the inmate went missing from the jail following a ceremony linked to Marka-e-Haq. A routine headcount conducted after the event revealed that one prisoner was unaccounted for.
Police said Naveed was accused of kidnapping a trader named Rehan, who was later murdered. A body was also recovered based on information provided by the suspect after his arrest.
Officials further stated that the accused had previously been arrested in connection with the murder case of journalist Wali Babar, but was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The escape has triggered renewed scrutiny of security protocols at Malir Jail, which has faced similar incidents in the past. Authorities noted that over 200 prisoners had escaped from the facility last year before security measures were tightened.
Police and jail authorities have launched an investigation into how the suspect managed to flee despite enhanced security arrangements, especially during a period of heightened vigilance.
