Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Wednesday that any possible ceasefire would depend on the United States ending what he described as a maritime blockade at the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he called Zionist aggression across multiple fronts.
In a post on X, Ghalibaf said a ceasefire would have no real meaning if restrictions on maritime trade continued or if global economic pressure remained in place.
He also claimed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would not be possible while ceasefire violations continue.
Ghalibaf further said recent military pressure against Iran had failed to achieve its goals and argued that coercion would not succeed. According to him, the only path forward is recognition of what he described as the rights of the Iranian people.
The remarks came after reports that Donald Trump had announced a last-minute extension to a ceasefire arrangement. Claims regarding Pakistan mediating a ceasefire, a US naval blockade of Iranian ports, or official suspension of attacks have not been independently verified by major international sources.
The broader situation in the region remains tense, with global markets closely watching developments around the Strait of Hormuz due to its importance for oil and shipping routes.
