One Room, One Light Policy by IT Ministry to Save Energy
ISLAMABAD, January 20, 2023- The federal cabinet authorized a “National Energy Conservation Plan” to conserve power and petroleum.
The cabinet began implementing energy preservation strategies in government institutes and buildings to save energy. The Information Technology (IT) ministry has also begun executing the strategy, and IT minister Amin ul Haq has established the “one room, one light” rule to preserve energy in emergencies. The ministry has notified all government IT buildings and platforms to execute the directive. IT Minister Ameenul Haq stated all IT ministry departments must follow directions. He added that any excess electricity use wastes foreign reserves.
In a cabinet meeting in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Khawaja Asif told the media that the energy conservation plan would save Pakistan 8,000 to 9,000 megawatts of electricity and Rs62 billion a year. In addition to the “one room, one light” approach, the government has closed stores earlier to preserve energy. According to Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, the federal cabinet approved the energy-saving plan, which shuts markets at 8:30 pm and wedding halls at 10 night. Markets and shopping malls will close nationwide at 8:30 pm and wedding venues at 10:00 pm.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently promised that all government buildings, starting with federal government institutions, will be solar-powered by April. If all government buildings use solar power, we can save 300 to 500 megawatts per month and cut our $27 billion import bill.
