Pak-China Set to Sign a Free Trade Agreement for Carpet Sector
The inclusion of handmade carpets in China and Pakistan’s free trade deal is intended to promote exports of Pakistan’s carpet industry, which employs thousands of women.
The Prime Minister was briefed on environmental protection measures planned for the development of Ravi Urban City.
According to Riaz Ahmed, vice chairwoman of Pakistan’s Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the carpet industry had “hit rock bottom due to many trade-related impediments.”
In 2015, Pakistan’s exports of hand-knotted carpets fell from $300 million to $68 million due to rising freight costs, increasing tax levies, customs clearance fees, and warehouse charges.
Consequently, tens of thousands of women employed in daily wagering have lost their jobs.

According to Ahmed, women make up 70% of the workforce in the hand-knotted carpet sector. The inclusion of hand-knotted carpets in the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement grants duty-free access to China’s $2 trillion import market for 313 export products.
