GILGIT-BALTISTAN: The Pakistan Army has completed a 66-kilometre road linking Shagma in Astore with Manthokha in Skardu, improving road connectivity between the two areas across Gilgit-Baltistan’s mountainous landscape.

The new route passes through challenging terrain and is expected to make travel between Astore and Skardu considerably easier. According to the reported details, the journey can now be completed within a few hours, reducing the difficulties faced by residents travelling between the two districts.

The road also restores direct access to district headquarters for eight villages in the Phoota Khas Valley of Gultari. The improved connection is expected to help residents reach essential services, markets and administrative offices more conveniently.

Support for Local Trade and Livelihoods

Beyond improving travel, the Shagma-Manthokha road could benefit local economic activity by making it easier to transport agricultural produce, livestock and other goods. Better access to markets may create new opportunities for farmers, traders and small businesses in communities that have faced transportation challenges because of the region’s geography.

The route may also help residents access healthcare, education and other public services with greater ease. Its practical benefits will depend on road conditions, seasonal accessibility and ongoing maintenance.

Improving Regional Connectivity

Infrastructure development remains important in Gilgit-Baltistan, where steep mountains and remote settlements can make road construction particularly difficult. Improved transport links can help connect isolated communities with larger commercial and administrative centres.

Residents have reportedly welcomed the completion of the road, viewing it as an important improvement in everyday travel and regional access.

The Shagma-Manthokha link represents a step towards strengthening connectivity between Astore and Skardu. Continued maintenance and reliable year-round access will be important to ensure that local communities can benefit from the route over the long term.
