Pakistan Plans to Have 61,000 MWs Electricity Generation Capacity
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved an ambitious proposal to increase power generation capacity in 2030 from the current 34,776 megawatts to 61,112 MW.

The plan estimates that peak demand in 2030 will be 37,129 MW, compared to the current level of 23,790 MW. The total consumption in 2030 is estimated to be 207,418 GWh, up from 130,651 GWh in 2021, according to NEPRA.
NEPRA said on September 24 that Pakistan’s first ever ‘Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan 2021-30’ foresees that Alternative and Renewable Energy will comprise 60% of the total installed capacity by 2030.

According to the plan developed by National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), 143 potential projects with a total capacity of 10,062 MWs have been optimised. In addition, 6 447 megawatts (MW) of expensive thermal power plants will be retired within the length of the deal.
NEPRA instructed NTDC to consider including the project in its annual evaluation of “committed projects.” Oracle Power PLC has signed a contract for the execution of the project with China Coal Energy Co., a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Coal Group Co. Ltd.
