ISLAMABAD: The Park Road underpass in Islamabad has opened to traffic after months of delays, allowing motorists to use the newly completed section of the major road infrastructure project.
Traffic has started moving through the underpass, marking the opening of an important component of the broader Park Road development scheme.
The underpass is part of a larger infrastructure project estimated at around Rs. 10 billion. The overall scheme includes an overhead structure, service roads, and other associated road works designed to improve movement across the corridor.
Improved Connectivity Expected
The project is intended to improve connectivity between Park Road, Margalla Avenue, and nearby areas by providing a more efficient route for motorists.
The underpass is expected to help separate traffic movements at the intersection, potentially reducing congestion and improving journey times for commuters using the corridor. Better traffic flow could also reduce unnecessary vehicle idling and fuel consumption during busy periods.
Project Faced Completion Delays
The opening comes after the project missed earlier completion expectations. In June, Minister of State for Interior Muhammad Talal Chaudhry informed the Senate that the first phase, covering the underpass, was expected to be completed in July.
At the time, he indicated that the remaining components of the project were expected to be completed in August.
With the underpass now operational, attention will shift to the completion of the remaining works included in the wider Park Road infrastructure scheme. The final impact on traffic conditions will depend on the completion and integration of these associated components.
