The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has advanced its investigation into three major cases, including the suicides of two medical students and an operating theater (OT) video scandal, after holding preliminary hearings and referring all matters to its Disciplinary Committee for final decisions.
According to a PMDC statement, the initial hearings were conducted to ensure a fair review before formal disciplinary proceedings begin. Representatives from the institutions involved were invited to present their accounts and help establish the facts.
PMDC President Rizwan Taj reviewed the early findings and sought further clarifications from officials to verify key details and assess available evidence before sending the cases forward.
The first hearing focused on the OT video scandal involving five doctors — Tayaba Fatima, Zainab Tahir, Muhammad Essa, Ayesha Afzal, and Maham Amin.
The case relates to a video circulated on social media allegedly showing postgraduate trainees at Lady Wellington Hospital in Lahore racing while performing surgeries on two operating tables and making inappropriate remarks.
The second hearing examined the suicide of Fareeha, a final-year MBBS student at Fatima Jinnah Medical College in Lahore.
The third case involved the suicide of Fehmida Leghari, a third-year MBBS student at Muhammad Medical College in Mirpurkhas. Principals from both institutions appeared before the council to provide details.
After the hearings, Rizwan Taj referred all three matters to the PMDC Disciplinary Committee, which is expected to meet next week.
He said the council would ensure strict action against any individual or institution found responsible for negligence, misconduct, or violations of student protection policies.
The PMDC also stressed the need for effective grievance systems within medical institutions and said creating a safe and supportive learning environment remains a top priority.
