PTA Allows Telecos to Operate in Tribal Areas
Islamabad: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has instructed mobile telecommunication firms to restore internet service in a number of permitted districts as the security situation in numerous tribal parts of Balochistan and the former Fata provinces starts to improve.

The Ministry of Interior has authorised the resume of internet service in Turbat city, Kech, Awaran, Panjgur, Washuk, and Kalat along the highways RCDH, N-30, N-85, and Awaran-Bela Road following a review of the security situation by the relevant authorities.
In a same vein, the regulator has given the go-ahead for internet services that were previously suspended in the Khyber area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Even basic phone service had previously been cut off in several places, including Tirah Valley.
In a previous letter to the interior ministry, the Ministry of Information and Technology (MoIT) emphasised that the government’s goal was to provide internet access nationwide and that the “force majeure” clause might be lifted in areas that did not face significant threats to law and order or terrorist attacks.
As soon as security clearances are secured, the PTA has declared that internet services would gradually be enhanced and restored in other locations as well.

Recall that the government has also authorised the sale of internet spectrum to Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), where internet services are currently provided by the military-run Special Communication Organization (SCO).
