Punjab Announce Smog Calamity, Steps Afoot for Mitigation
According to news sources, the Punjab government declared the smog in Lahore to be a catastrophe and demanded special measures to address the situation. The event occurred after the US Consulate in Lahore measured the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 223 and 231 for Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 in Lahore.

The government instructed the administrative secretaries of the affected departments, as well as the commissioners and deputy commissioners, to take special measures and make demonstrable efforts to reduce the impact of the smog.
In this regard, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has already taken measures to prevent stubble fires throughout the province, especially in urban areas. In this regard, the provincial interior ministry has invoked Section 144 for a month to prevent the burning of paper, rubber, plastic, and crop waste.
In addition, the government has made the necessary arrangements to prevent vehicular particulate matter emissions and smog. Lahore has been the most polluted city in Pakistan for several years, and Lahore has been covered in a thick layer of pollution from October to January since 2014.
