Punjab Suddenly Cancels 16,000 Jobs for School Teachers
ISLAMABAD, January 18, 2023- Punjab’s provincial government has canceled teachers’ recruitment for 16,000 positions.
The provincial administration has withdrawn the expression of interest (EOI) for the recruitment of tens of thousands of instructors in Punjab’s public institutions, putting their employment in jeopardy. According to a notification dated 12 January 2023, the School Education Department (SED) of Punjab canceled the EOI for the employment of a management business to conduct teacher recruitment examinations. In the announcement, SED’s Section Officer (SO) Recruitment indicated that the SED had canceled the EOI that was advertised on November 26, 2022, for the aforementioned subject.

The SED has canceled the EOI under Rule 35 of the 2014 PPRA Rules due to the growing number of teaching positions. The SO Recruitment also solicited new proposals in response to future advertisements.
In June 2022, the then-Punjab government, led by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), announced the creation of thousands of teaching positions in all SED-run public schools. Former Education Minister of Punjab, Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan, stated that the provincial government would hire around 16,000 teachers. He claimed that 230,000 instructors were recruited by the government of the PML-N between 2013 and 2018.
