Rawalpindi: The Punjab Communication and Works Department is set to begin construction of two underpasses on Peshawar Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 8 billion, with work scheduled to start on September 7, 2026.

The projects will be developed near Race Course Park and Charing Cross to improve traffic flow along one of Rawalpindi’s major road corridors. The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been awarded the construction contract, while alternate service roads have been prepared to manage traffic during the construction period.

Once work begins, traffic on Peshawar Road will be diverted onto newly developed service routes, including stretches connecting Qasim Market to Radio Pakistan and Maryam Hospital to Rafay Mall.

The original plan included three underpasses, including one near the Army Graveyard. However, the plan was later revised to two underpasses, with an at-grade road planned at the Army Graveyard location.

Authorities have also completed the shifting of major utilities, including electricity infrastructure, water lines, telephone connections and cable networks.

The two projects form part of a broader plan to develop a 25-kilometre signal-free corridor from Islamabad Expressway to Motorway Chowk, aimed at improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion along Peshawar Road.
