RAWALPINDI: A proposal is under consideration to upgrade 13 roads in Rawalpindi’s inner city. The project would cover carpeting, rehabilitation and expansion of the roads.
The scheme would be funded through the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation’s (RMC) development funds. The corporation has around Rs. 2.86 billion available for development projects. Part of these funds could be used for the proposed road work.
Officials are discussing whether the Communications and Works Department should execute the project. The RMC would provide the funding under the current proposal. However, the execution could be assigned to another government department.
The proposal has led to questions about the RMC’s ability to manage a project of this size. Sources also pointed to concerns over political interference within the municipal corporation. These issues have been cited as factors in considering another department for execution.
However, the proposed arrangement could create administrative and audit concerns. Officials have noted that the RMC may face audit objections if its funds are used for a project executed by another department.
The proposal is still under discussion. No final written decision has been issued so far.
RMC Chief Officer Faisal Shehzad also confirmed that the matter remains under consideration. He said no final decision had been made in writing.
If approved, the project would focus on improving road conditions in Rawalpindi’s inner-city areas. The final execution plan will depend on the decision of the relevant authorities.
