RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) project has reached approximately 99% completion on its main carriageway, with authorities directing the contractor to accelerate work on several remaining components before the road is fully completed.
The progress was reviewed during a detailed inspection led by Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Salman Ghani, who examined construction activities across different sections of the Ring Road and assessed the work still pending.
Final Construction Work Underway
During the inspection, the commissioner directed the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to prioritize the completion of outstanding drainage works, retaining walls and interchange ramps. He also stressed that the remaining construction should meet the required engineering and quality standards.
Although the main carriageway is nearing completion, these supporting structures and interchange components remain important for bringing the project into full operational use.
Temporary M-2 Connection to Remain Operational
Authorities were also instructed to maintain the temporary connection with the M-2 Motorway at Thalian Interchange, including ramps providing access toward Lahore, until the relevant interchange works are completed.
The commissioner directed officials to implement the temporary traffic management plan effectively to maintain safe vehicle movement and reduce disruption for commuters while final construction continues.
Tolling System Also Reviewed
The inspection also included discussion of a future Single Network Tolling System for the Ring Road, with FWO expected to play a role in its implementation.
Once fully operational, the Ring Road is expected to provide an alternative route around Rawalpindi, potentially reducing traffic pressure on major urban roads while improving connections between districts and major inter-provincial routes.
Improved connectivity could also support commercial and economic activity along areas linked to the corridor, although the extent of these benefits will depend on the road’s final operational arrangements and surrounding development.
Completion Remains the Focus
The Punjab government has emphasized timely completion of major development projects, while officials have been directed to address outstanding work without unnecessary delays.
With the main carriageway reportedly at 99% completion, attention is now focused on finishing the remaining infrastructure, completing interchange facilities and ensuring safe traffic arrangements before the Ring Road becomes fully operational.
