The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has approved a proposal to develop markets and commercial plazas on vacant plots and open spaces within its housing schemes, aiming to improve land utilization and generate additional revenue.

The decision was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Rawalpindi Commissioner Abdul Aamer Khattak, which was attended by senior RDA officials, including Additional Director General Masood Ahmad and Chief Engineer Anwar Baran.

During the meeting, the Estate Management Directorate presented an asset management plan covering vacant properties and open spaces across 13 RDA-owned housing schemes.

According to officials, the initiative is intended to prevent illegal encroachments and land grabbing while transforming underutilized public land into productive commercial assets. The plan is also expected to create sustainable revenue streams for the authority and promote more efficient use of available land.

Commissioner Khattak directed the RDA to take all necessary steps to maximize the value of unused land and ensure the successful implementation of the project.

He also instructed officials to expedite the preparation of designs and development plans for the proposed commercial projects, stressing the need for timely execution.

Authorities believe the initiative will not only safeguard public assets but also contribute to the economic development of housing schemes through the creation of new commercial facilities and business opportunities.
