Reconstruction of Irrigation Channel Demanded
People in the Roop Kanai region of the Allai tehsil in Battagram have sought the restoration of an irrigation channel that was wrecked during last month’s rains, which also resulted in the shutdown of micro hydropower generators and the suspension of power to the hamlet.

They told Dawn that the waterway was built to supply irrigation water to the rice fields and to power mini hydropower units. They stated that water was being wasted due to major damage to the channel and that the town had been without electricity for more than 25 days.
Zakirullah, a local resident, reported that certain sections of the water channel had been damaged by rain in the past, and that villagers had repaired them. However, strong rains and high winds in mid-June entirely ruined the channel.

Shakirullah, a local resident, stated that they had brought up the issue with the local MNA and MPA as well as the relevant department, but they paid no attention.
He stated that locals were had to travel to neighbouring bazaars and villages to charge their cell phones. They demanded that the relevant department restore or rebuild the water channel to alleviate their misery.
