Research Center of Gandhara Cultural Heritage in Islamabad

The Gandhara Cultural Heritage Administration of the Republic of Korea (CHA) and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (KCHF) organised a ceremony to inaugurate the Gandhara Cultural Heritage Research Centre at the Islamabad Museum in Pakistan.

High-ranking officials from both nations, including the CHA Administrator, the KCHF President, and members of the Pakistani government, attended the occasion. With the Korean government’s tremendous technical and financial support, the center’s foundation aims to systematically maintain and safeguard the Buddhist Cultural Heritage of Gandhara in Pakistan.

The project serves as a symbol of the two nations’ deep cultural and religious links and their dedication to international collaboration and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Over the past three decades, Korea and Pakistan have worked together on numerous training programs and collaborative research projects in cultural heritage.

For the Buddhist people in Korea, the Buddhist Art of Gandhara is of utmost importance, and exhibitions highlighting this art have been successfully held in South Korea. 

The help provided by the Korean government consists of finance, technical support, creating capacity, and the transfer of knowledge and technology in fields including conservation, digitization, and museum administration. The project demonstrates Korea’s dedication to sustainable development and cultural heritage preservation while enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries.

The CHA Administrator emphasized the similar Buddhist tradition historically connected Pakistan and Korea.

The 40th anniversary of the two countries diplomatic ties was commemorated at the same time as the launch of the Gandhara Cultural Heritage Research Centre. The Korean Ambassador emphasized the abundance of Buddhist sites in Pakistan and said that encouraging religious tourism might significantly impact Pakistan’s economy.

In accordance with their agreement with the Pakistani government, Korea will offer cutting-edge machinery to help uncover priceless artifacts and historical sites there.
