Rs 8 Billion Allocated for Karachi’s 19 Development Schemes
The Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government has earmarked Rs 8 billion in the provincial budget for fiscal year 2021-22 for a total of 19 infrastructure development initiatives in Karachi. This is almost Rs 6 billion more than what was allotted for the city in the preceding fiscal year.

The allocation of Rs 8 billion for “Mega Schemes for Karachi City” in the provincial budget for 2021-22 is disproportionate given Karachi’s population and the amount of revenue the city generates to the provincial coffers.
According to budget records, the Sindh government has earmarked Rs8 billion for 13 new and six continuing big development programmes in Karachi for the upcoming fiscal year, compared to barely Rs1.94 billion for 19 large development schemes in the provincial capital for the current fiscal year 2020-21.

Even in his budget speech to the Sindh Assembly on Tuesday, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah criticised the performance of the elected set-up and praised administrators when he stated that the KMC and DMCs “of Karachi have been plagued with maladministration and poor resource generation for a very long time.”
