Saarc Countries Must Promote Regional Cooperation
Sunday in Lahore, the Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc), Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, emphasized the significance of establishing regional cooperation among member states for the region’s prosperity, progress, development, and alleviation of poverty.

Speaking at a reception given in his honor, he urged the Saarc council of ministers to assemble soon to address procedural issues that are causing Saarc and its apex linked bodies enormous suffering, as well as to take the necessary steps to enhance economic and commercial growth among member states. He indicated that he will discuss the issue with Nepal, the current chair, in order to resolve it as quickly as feasible.
He underlined the significance of deeper cooperation in order to promote greater regional economic integration in South Asia, and that all obstacles to a smooth flow of economic growth be removed as soon as feasible by mutual agreement among member states.
Iftikhar Ali Malik, a veteran trade leader and founder chairman of the Pak-U.S. Business Council and former president of the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, greeted the Saarc secretary-general on his four-day first visit to Pakistan since taking office in March 2020 on behalf of the Pakistani business community. He emphasized the significance of resolving the problem of recognition of apex and related entities in order to realize the goals of Saarc, which were conceived in 1985.

He stressed that Saarc must adopt a long-term strategy to aid in the elimination of impediments impeding intraregional trade and economic ties. He urged member nations to take use of the potential for regional economic cooperation and integration in South Asia and to reevaluate their policy priorities in order to promote economic connectivity.
Iftikhar Ali Malik complimented Esala Ruwan Weerakoon for taking the time to visit Pakistan at a time when regional cooperation in Saarc is at an all-time low, and he hoped that Ruwan would analyze a host of problems facing Pakistan’s business community due to regional challenges.
