SECMC Thar Coal Mine Operational Capacity Expansion Project
According to news reports, the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) Board has approved the development of Thar coal Block II mine to an annual operational capacity of 12.2 million tonnes. By June 2023, the USD 93 million projects will be completed.
According to the Engro Energy Spokesperson, the mine’s annual output is currently 3,8 million tonnes, the majority of which is utilized to fuel the nation’s 660-megawatt coal-fired power plants.
With the expansion of mining capacity, the price of coal will decrease to USD 27 per tonne from the present USD 60 per tonne. In addition, the completion of the Block II expansion project is projected to save the government USD 450 million in imports and PKR 74 billion in circular debt.

Notably, Pakistan now generates 32% of its electricity from coal-fired power plants constructed as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Nonetheless, as the price of coal on the global market rises, power plants are working at less than their maximum capacity.
According to the press release, after the expansion project is completed, Pakistan will have a continuous and sustainable supply of coal until 2030.
