Sepa Collects Rs 80M Charges From Mineral Water Companies
Karachi: The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) gathered Rs 80 million from eight mineral water companies in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling and deposited the money in the national treasury.

The Supreme Court’s 2019 ruling on a suo motu case involving businesses selling water after extracting the subterranean source without charging as well as the quality and suitability of the same for human use has resulted in Sepa’s first recovery in Sindh.
The apex court was very explicit that the money would only be used for building the dams and other water-related projects, and under no circumstances would it be used for anything else. But, after the dams are built, the provincial governments will be free to use the money earned in the accounts, subject to the highest court’s directive.

The court ordered each corporation to begin planting 10,000 trees annually and eventually phase out plastic bottles in order to mitigate the effects on the environment.
It promised that in the interim, it would ensure that the plastic used to make bottles was approved as safe for human consumption by recognised laboratories.
