Setting up of Gandhara Cultural Authority on the cards
ISLAMABAD: The first worldwide “Gandhara symposium,” which was conducted in the nation’s capital, has created enormous chances for Pakistan to promote Buddhist tourism and use it to improve its reputation abroad.
The country needs to fix some faults that appear to be contributing to a bad reputation, though, at the same time.
Senior monks and academics from a number of Buddhist nations, including Myanmar and Vietnam, where Muslims and Pakistanis both had reputation issues, hailed the conference as a wonderful success.

In response to the dignitaries’ comments, Pakistan is expected to create a Gandhara Cultural Authority to remove obstacles that limit the appeal of the Gandhara culture at the international level.
The academics and religious leaders who attended the conference have urged the authorities to advance the project and broaden its appeal to non-Buddhist tourists as well, who are interested in learning more about the historic Gandhara civilization.

The most revered person made the suggestion that Pakistan should change its security posture. Anil Sakya is the honorary rector of the World Buddhist University in Thailand.
“I am a man of peace and talk of peace for all, but during my most recent visit to Pakistan, I was photographed with two guns,” he said, adding that the government must deploy “soft security,” in which weapons are kept hidden but always ready to be used when necessary.

In addition to the security issue, a major obstacle to the growth and promotion of tourism in the nation was the absence of institutional support for the tourists.
The director of the Central Buddhist Museum in Seoul, Dr. Mee Deung, who is also a high priest, raised concerns about the difficulty in acquiring a visa for Pakistan.
Dr. Deung, who was visiting Pakistan for the first time, claimed that initially, he had the same view of the nation as anybody else, but that this rapidly changed once he visited the holy places and examined the original relics.

When he observed the “stones and rocks that host the roots of Buddhism,” he remarked, “My heart was pumping out and my mind went back to history.” He continued, “But Pakistan has to map these places properly with historical references and conduct studies with the help of experts belonging to the Buddhist world.”
The Gandhara preservation and conservation project is currently being run at 31 locations, 15 of which are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 16 of which are in Taxila. Although the project was meant to expire in 2025, the Korean government intends to prolong it by another five years, to 2030. It seems possible that Great Britain will be included in that phase.
