ISLAMABAD: The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has started working with the Punjab government to identify suitable land for a proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Islamabad. The development was shared by SIFC National Coordinator Lt Gen Asad ur Rehman Afzal Cheema during a meeting with representatives of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, according to reports published on October 30 and 31, 2026.
The proposed economic zone is currently at the land-identification stage, with no final location or development schedule announced. The discussions are part of broader efforts to explore opportunities for industrial growth and attract investment through improved infrastructure and business facilities.

During the meeting, participants also discussed the possibility of establishing a modern industrial estate and an international-standard exhibition and convention centre. However, available reports do not clarify whether these facilities would be included in the proposed SEZ or developed as separate initiatives.
SIFC’s coordination with the Punjab government is focused on identifying appropriate land for the proposed project. The specific site, land area and arrangements for its development have not yet been disclosed.
The proposed Islamabad Special Economic Zone could create opportunities for manufacturing businesses, industrial facilities, warehouses and related commercial infrastructure if the plan moves towards implementation. However, its potential impact will depend on the final location, investment framework and facilities offered to businesses.

For property investors and landowners, the absence of a confirmed site means that claims about particular areas being part of the proposed zone should be treated cautiously. No official land acquisition details, investment figures, tax incentives or project timeline have been announced in the available reports.
The next important developments will include the selection and official notification of the site, details of the proposed industrial facilities and the announcement of investment and development plans. Until these details are confirmed, the Islamabad SEZ remains a proposal under preliminary planning.
