A tragic submarine accident near the Egyptian resort city of Hurghada has claimed the lives of at least six Russian tourists. The incident occurred approximately one kilometre from shore in the Red Sea’s popular promenade area when the tourist vessel “Sindbad” sank with 50 people onboard, including 45 tourists and five Egyptian crew members.

The cause of the submarine’s sinking remains unknown. Local authorities reported that the weather was clear, and underwater visibility was excellent at the time of the accident. An official investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Sindbad submarine, built for underwater tourism, featured large viewing windows and had the capacity to dive up to 25 meters (82 feet). It was a popular attraction for visitors eager to explore the Red Sea’s rich coral reefs and marine biodiversity.
Hurghada, situated roughly 460 kilometres southeast of Cairo, is a prominent tourist destination, particularly for Russian visitors. Despite this recent tragedy, Egypt continues to thrive as a top travel location. In 2024, the country ranked first in Africa for tourism revenue, earning $14.1 billion—surpassing even the revenue of the Suez Canal, according to a UN tourism report.
Egyptian authorities are urging calm and assuring the public that safety protocols for tourist activities are under review.
