ISLAMABAD: Construction of the long-awaited Sukkur-Hyderabad M-6 Motorway is moving closer to the start of formal work, with groundbreaking planned for November.

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said preparatory activities for the project are progressing and construction is expected to begin next month. The motorway has remained pending for around three decades.

The minister shared the update on social media and described the project as an important development for Sindh and Pakistan. He said the motorway is expected to improve road connectivity and support trade and commercial activity along the route.

The M-6 is expected to strengthen the road link between Sukkur and Hyderabad and improve connections with other parts of the country. Better connectivity could also support the movement of freight and passengers across Sindh.

Aleem Khan said President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would be invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. The Sindh chief minister and members of the provincial cabinet are also expected to be invited.

The project has remained a long-standing infrastructure priority, with delays affecting its progress over the years. The planned start of construction marks a significant step towards moving the motorway from planning and preparatory stages into implementation.

The communications minister described the M-6 as an important project for Sindh’s development and wider national connectivity. Its progress will now depend on the completion of preparatory work and subsequent construction activities.

The motorway is expected to play a role in improving transport links between major cities and commercial centres in Sindh once completed.
