Twitter May Start Selling Usernames to Make Money
ISLAMABAD, January 20, 2023- According to a report by New York Times, Twitter may start selling usernames to generate revenue.
Since December, corporate engineers have considered holding online auctions for usernames or handles. It is unclear if this notion will be adopted and if it will affect all users or just a handful. Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, is seeking ways to generate revenue.
Musk tweeted last month that Twitter would remove 1.5 billion inactive users. After buying the social network in October 2022, he tweeted about freeing up accounts with appealing usernames. Twitter has not commented yet on this issue. Twitter outlaws “username squatting” or selling usernames. For years, black market users have bought desired usernames. A youngster was arrested in 2020 for hacking the social network and selling Musk, Obama, and Gates usernames.
In October, Telegram announced it would auction usernames for accounts and channels using a TON blockchain marketplace. After buying Twitter for $44 billion, Musk has been trying to boost ad revenue, which has fallen. Since Musk took charge, advertisers have departed, and the firm has cut its internal revenue expectations.
The corporation made many revenue-boosting adjustments recently. It declared intends to repeal the political ad ban soon. Twitter launched a $7.99 Twitter Blue subscription with a verified blue checkmark in November.
