The federal government is planning a major expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure by installing 40 Level 3 fast-charging stations along motorways and the National Highway network at average intervals of 120 kilometers.
According to official documents, the broader proposal includes the nationwide installation of 1,050 Level 3 fast chargers capable of charging EVs within 40 minutes to one hour. The plan also features 750 Level 2 chargers for medium-duration charging, 600 Level 1 chargers for overnight charging, and 600 battery-swapping stations for quick energy replacement.
The motorway charging network is aimed at supporting long-distance electric vehicle travel while reducing range anxiety for future EV users across Pakistan.
To support the project, the government plans to allocate Rs. 2.25 billion in viability gap funding under a public-private partnership model, especially for locations where private investment may not be financially attractive.
The initiative is part of a wider target to establish 3,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2030.
Under the proposed policy, oil marketing companies will also be required to participate in the EV transition. At least 10 percent of fuel stations operated by each company in every province will have to install Level 3 fast chargers.
If approved, the project will be implemented in phases, with the first rollout expected within the next six months. The Power Division has already set EV charging tariffs at Rs. 39.7 per kilowatt-hour to support commercial viability.
Officials believe the initiative could play a key role in accelerating electric vehicle adoption and developing Pakistan’s long-term clean transportation infrastructure.
