Union Berlin have made history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach until the end of the season, following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart after the club’s 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim in the Bundesliga.
The decision marks a landmark moment for both the German club and world football, as Eta becomes the first woman to take charge of a men’s Bundesliga team. She assumes immediate responsibility as Union Berlin look to steady their form during a challenging phase of the season and avoid further slip in the standings.
Eta will lead the team through the remaining league fixtures as the club aims to finish the campaign on a stronger note. Her appointment has been widely viewed as a significant step forward for representation in elite men’s football.
Already a pioneering figure in German football, the 34-year-old has broken multiple barriers in recent years. She previously became the first female assistant coach in Bundesliga history and the first woman to be part of a men’s Bundesliga matchday coaching staff.
Since joining Union Berlin’s coaching setup in 2023, Eta has earned recognition for her tactical input, leadership qualities, and influence within the technical staff. Her elevation to interim head coach now places her at the helm of a top-flight men’s team in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
