Uplift Projects at Public Universities Suffers Slow Pace of Work
Karachi: A number of public universities, including Karachi University (KU), are moving slowly through their development projects and have barely used 25% of their available funding so far this fiscal year. The remaining funds will expire after June 30.

The conference was presided over by Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, advisor to the chief minister on universities and higher education.
“Despite collecting Rs 30 million of the Rs 130 million allotted for this fiscal year, the JSMU was unable to set up a separate bank account for the building and renovation of a girls’ hostel and an academic building scheduled for 2015. It was expected that the project will cost Rs. 791 million.
Additionally, it claims that the University was unable to secure a consultant’s assistance in order to finish building the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chair and Convention Centre, which is expected to cost $442 million.

Of the released Rs 177 million, the university has spent Rs 164 million by 2016. The 2014 project idea has been on hold since 2017.
