According to WABetaInfo, a trusted WhatsApp update tracker, the upcoming feature, known as “Username and PIN,” will present three privacy settings: “Username,” “Phone number,” and “Username with PIN.”
With the new WhatsApp Username Feature, users can only reveal their usernames rather than their phone numbers. This means that while people you already know will still see your phone number, new contacts will only see your username in your profile. This change desires to provide more privacy for WhatsApp users by masking their phone numbers from those they haven’t yet interacted with.
For even more privacy, the “Username with PIN” option lets users link with others using a secure four-digit PIN. Only those who know the PIN will be capable of contacting the user. However, existing contacts can still reach out via the phone number even if the PIN is activated.
This WhatsApp Privacy Update is designed to give users more prominent control over who can contact them initially. The feature is currently available for testing on WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.2. Stable Android users will need to wait for a future update to access this feature.
The official launch date for this feature has not been announced yet, but it is predicted to be available by the end of 2024. Users will have the option to enable or disable the feature based on their choices.
In addition to the username feature, iOS users can look forward to a new chat theme feature in upcoming updates. This will allow users to customize chat bubble colors and preview how message colors will appear once used.
