Wikipedia Foundation Asks PTA to Unblock Wikipedia in Pakistan
Wikipedia was prohibited by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) around two days ago due to its sacrilegious content.
The Wikipedia Foundation has recently requested that the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) unblock Wikipedia and its services in Pakistan. This demand came just three days after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shut Wikipedia in Pakistan, claiming that the website includes sacrilegious content that offends Muslim sensibilities.

On 1st February, PTA imposed a temporary 48-hour restriction on Wikipedia and asked that the world’s largest free encyclopedia erase “illegal” content in accordance with government directives. Along with the interim block, PTA stated that the block will become permanent if demands are not met.
Wikipedia did not alter the information, and on February 3rd, Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects were fully prohibited in Pakistan.

According to monthly data, Wikipedia receives almost 50 million page views from Pakistan. The platform is one of the largest online encyclopaedias in the world and an ever-growing repository of knowledge.
Users from around the world are able to modify and add content to the platform, making it a legitimate information source. Pakistan has a large number of Wikipedia editors who regularly provide new content to the site, however they will no longer have access to the site.

In its statement for the PTA, the Wikipedia foundation said, “We hope that the Pakistani government joins the Wikimedia Foundation in its commitment to knowledge as a human right and promptly restores access to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects so that the people of Pakistan can continue to receive and share knowledge with the rest of the world.”
