A rare medical case from Hong Kong has drawn global attention after a woman reportedly lost nearly 10 years of memory temporarily following severe straining caused by constipation.
According to multiple international media reports, the woman had been dealing with constipation for almost two weeks. During one bathroom visit, she applied excessive pressure while trying to pass stool and suddenly became confused, unable to remember major events from the previous decade.
Concerned family members immediately took her to the hospital for medical evaluation.
Doctors later diagnosed the episode as transient global amnesia, a rare condition that causes sudden but temporary memory loss. For around eight hours, the woman was unable to recall recent memories, although her condition gradually improved without causing permanent brain damage.
Interestingly, after recovering, she reportedly had no memory of the eight-hour episode itself.
Medical experts commenting on the incident explained that intense physical straining can sometimes temporarily reduce blood flow to the brain, potentially triggering short-term memory disturbances.
Doctors say the condition is usually harmless and resolves on its own, but repeated episodes should not be ignored and may require further medical attention.
