World Bank Approves $442m Loan
The World Bank has authorised a $442 million loan to improve access to water and sanitation services for the most vulnerable rural populations in Punjab, where the lender anticipates a “significant increase” in poverty.

The board of directors of the World Bank approved the Punjab Rural Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Project (PRSWSSP) to improve water supply and sanitation infrastructure and services for sustainable access to drinking water and safe wastewater management, according to a handout issued by the World Bank’s local office.
In addition, the loan funds will be used to create wastewater treatment facilities that decrease the danger of faecal pollution of water resources in heat pressured and water-scarce regions by providing safe effluent for 2,000 settlements.
The proportion of homes with drinking water at the point of use that meets World Health Organization (WHO) standards will climb to 75%.

Farhan Sami, the leader of the PRS WSSP Task Team, stated that the initiative will reduce water-borne infections and ensure service quality and customer care through a publicly traded firm that is financially sustainable.
According to the World Bank, the project will encompass 16 districts, 50 percent of which will be located in the south of Punjab and 25 percent each in the central and northern regions.
