Former US President Donald Trump landed in Beijing on Wednesday without being personally received at the airport by Chinese President Xi Jinping, a diplomatic detail that quickly attracted global attention.
Trump was instead welcomed by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, senior Chinese officials, and ambassadors from both countries. Observers believe the move reflects China’s carefully managed diplomatic protocol rather than any unexpected snub.
A similar situation occurred during Trump’s 2017 visit to China, when Xi Jinping also did not attend the airport reception.
Despite Xi’s absence, the presence of Vice President Han and other senior officials signaled that Beijing still considers the visit diplomatically significant. China often uses the level of official representation to communicate political and strategic messages in international relations.
Trump arrived aboard Air Force One alongside several prominent business leaders, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, adding further attention to the visit amid growing global focus on US-China economic and technology ties.
