140k Acres Burnt in Greece as Fire Rages
Pefkofyto: Hundreds of firefighters battled fires that destroyed a record amount of forests in Greece; hundreds of families were rendered homeless; however, strong rains gave relief to disaster-stricken Turkey.

More than 1,450 Greek firemen, supported by at least 15 aircraft, were battling the fires, and reinforcements were arriving from abroad, according to the fire service.
With strong winds and temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) forecasted in several sections of Greece on Saturday, the fire is likely to continue for some time.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System, about 56,655 hectares (140,000 acres) had burned in Greece over the past ten days. The average number of burned hectares between 2008 and 2020 was 1,700 each year.
