Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that Karachi’s University Road will be reopened to traffic by the end of July, as construction on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project continues at full pace.
During a visit to the project site, the minister said that work is being carried out around the clock to ensure timely completion of the development scheme. He acknowledged the inconvenience faced by commuters due to ongoing construction delays.
Ongoing Development and Road Rehabilitation
Memon stated that the Sindh government has undertaken road rehabilitation projects across the province using its own resources. He added that development work is continuing despite challenges on roads that fall under federal administrative control within Sindh.
The minister also highlighted that a new terminal is under construction on the Northern Bypass, which is expected to help ease traffic congestion in Karachi once completed.
Karachi’s Economic Importance
Speaking about the city’s role, Memon emphasized that Karachi contributes significantly to Pakistan’s employment and healthcare sectors, as people from across the country come to the city for jobs and medical treatment. He said this reality should be considered when comparing Karachi with other major cities.
He also criticized the current motorway connectivity, stating that Karachi should have been directly linked to the national motorway network from within the city itself.
Water Supply Challenges
Addressing civic issues, the senior minister noted that Karachi faces an estimated 20 percent water shortage due to its position at the tail end of the country’s water distribution system.
The statement comes as the provincial government continues work on major infrastructure projects aimed at improving traffic flow and urban mobility in the city.
