AI-Powered System Can Now Eliminate Mosquitoes in Real Time

As mosquito season returns, a developer has created an AI-powered system that uses computer vision, machine learning, and lasers to detect and eliminate mosquitoes automatically.

The project was developed by inventor Steven Cheng, who has been sharing videos of the technology on social media platform X. The system is designed to identify, track, and target mosquitoes with high precision.

How the Technology Works

According to Cheng, the project took about four months to develop and combines artificial intelligence with advanced imaging hardware.

The system uses a Canon DSLR camera equipped with a high-magnification zoom lens. Machine learning software analyzes camera footage and identifies mosquitoes in real time, allowing the device to lock onto targets automatically.

Cheng said collecting training data for the AI model involved extensive testing and exposure to mosquito bites during development.

Safety Features Built In

The laser system was designed with safety in mind.

The software can recognize people and potentially flammable objects before activating the laser. A secondary wide-angle camera helps improve detection accuracy, and the laser automatically shuts off if a person or sensitive object enters the targeting area.

These safeguards are intended to prevent accidental targeting of humans, pets, or household items.

New Versions Add Mobility and Night Vision

Later versions of the mosquito defense system introduced several upgrades.

The camera platform was mounted on a mobile wheeled base, allowing it to move around and search for mosquitoes indoors and outdoors.

Cheng also added infrared vision capabilities, enabling the system to detect insects in low-light conditions and at night. A redesigned high-speed tracking mechanism and a Gatling gun-inspired appearance were also included in newer prototypes.

AI Meets Pest Control

The project reflects a growing trend of using artificial intelligence in everyday applications beyond traditional computing tasks.

By combining AI-powered object recognition with automated targeting, the system aims to reduce the need for manual mosquito control methods.

However, the technology remains an experimental personal project and is not yet a commercial consumer product.

Other High-Tech Mosquito Solutions

While most people still rely on insect sprays, electric bug zappers, and repellents, several companies are also exploring laser-based mosquito control systems.

One example is the Photon Matrix, a crowdfunded laser mosquito tracker that gained attention through Indiegogo and is expected to begin shipping to customers this year.

As artificial intelligence continues to expand into new areas, projects like Cheng’s highlight how emerging technologies could eventually play a role in everyday pest control, although practical large-scale adoption may still be some time away.
