Pakistan Customs has stopped an attempt to import restricted cigarette tipping paper that was allegedly declared as “poster paper in reels” at the Collectorate of Customs Appraisement (West) in Karachi.
According to customs officials, the importer submitted documents stating that the shipment contained poster paper. However, customs authorities became suspicious during the clearance process and ordered a detailed examination of the consignment.
During the investigation, officials found that a certificate allegedly issued by international inspection company SGS had been submitted in support of the import. Further verification raised concerns that the document may have been forged and used to avoid import restrictions.
Laboratory testing later confirmed that the material was actually cigarette tipping paper rather than poster paper, supporting allegations of misdeclaration.
Following the findings, customs authorities reassessed the shipment under the correct tariff classification and initiated legal action against both the importer and the clearing agent involved in the case.
An FIR has been registered on charges including misdeclaration and forgery.
Officials also seized a second container linked to the same importer as part of the ongoing investigation.
Pakistan Customs stated that it will continue to enforce import regulations, prevent revenue losses, and take strict action against individuals or businesses attempting to violate customs and trade laws.
