The federal government has proposed abolishing the Federal Excise Duty (FED) on sports and electrolyte replenishing beverages that comply with World Health Organization (WHO) standards, according to the key provisions of the Finance Bill 2026-27.

The proposed tax relief forms part of the government’s broader strategy to rationalise the tax regime while improving access to products that support hydration and nutritional recovery.

If approved, the exemption will apply to beverages specifically formulated to replace electrolytes and fluids lost through physical activity, dehydration, illness, or exposure to extreme heat, provided they meet internationally recognised WHO standards.

Officials said the move is expected to ease the tax burden on manufacturers and importers of these products, a step that could eventually translate into lower retail prices for consumers.

Sports and electrolyte drinks are commonly used by athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals recovering from dehydration. Medical professionals often recommend electrolyte replenishment solutions in cases of excessive fluid loss caused by strenuous exercise, high temperatures, or certain health conditions.

Industry representatives have long maintained that beverages designed for functional health purposes should be treated differently from conventional sugary drinks under the tax framework. The proposed withdrawal of FED appears to recognise that distinction by limiting relief to products that meet prescribed health and nutritional criteria.

The measure also aligns with wider efforts to encourage healthier beverage choices and improve access to hydration products, particularly during periods of extreme heat when dehydration-related illnesses tend to increase.

The proposal is among several tax rationalisation measures included in the Budget 2026-27, which aims to strike a balance between revenue generation and targeted relief for selected sectors and products.

The abolition of FED on WHO-compliant sports and electrolyte replenishing beverages will come into effect once the Finance Bill 2026-27 receives parliamentary approval and is enacted into law.
