ISLAMABAD — The federal government has announced plans to construct two new underpasses and establish four emergency service centres in Islamabad as part of a broader initiative to improve traffic management, infrastructure and public services in the capital.
The decisions were taken during a high-level meeting at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters, chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The meeting reviewed the progress of ongoing development projects and discussed measures to strengthen Islamabad’s infrastructure and public service delivery.
During the meeting, the interior minister directed the relevant authorities to begin construction of the Kashmir Chowk Underpass and Faisal Mosque Underpass next month. The proposed projects are aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity at key points across the capital.
The meeting also focused on strengthening emergency response services in Islamabad. Mr Naqvi directed officials to complete the necessary legal and administrative formalities for the early establishment of a fully operational Emergency 1122 service in the capital.
Under the plan, four emergency service centres will be established to improve response times and provide residents with access to emergency assistance. The interior minister stressed that Islamabad needs an effective and reliable emergency response system and instructed officials to move forward with the project without unnecessary delays.
Focus on CDA’s Financial Sustainability
The meeting also reviewed proposals aimed at improving the CDA’s long-term financial position. Officials discussed permanent revenue-generating initiatives designed to increase the authority’s financial self-reliance and reduce dependence on conventional funding sources.
Mr Naqvi directed the CDA to accelerate these initiatives while ensuring that development activities continue according to approved plans.
The Islamabad Expressway Service Road Project was also reviewed during the meeting. The minister instructed authorities to ensure that the project is completed within its approved timeline and emphasised the importance of timely execution across all ongoing development schemes.
Officials briefed the meeting on the progress of several other major infrastructure projects as well as future development plans for the federal capital.
The proposed underpasses, emergency service centres and continued investment in road infrastructure are expected to support Islamabad’s growing population and mobility needs while improving the overall efficiency of public services in the city.
