Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved the establishment of a Project Management Unit (PMU) for the construction of the New Islamabad Convention, Exhibition and Expo Centre (NICEEC), a major infrastructure project estimated to cost Rs. 16 billion.

The decision was made during a CDA Board meeting as part of preparations for next year’s Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conference. The PMU will oversee the planning and timely execution of the project.

The new convention and exhibition centre will be constructed near the Bhara Kahu Bypass and is expected to span approximately 270,000 square feet. According to officials, the project is scheduled for completion within 18 months.

The bidding process is currently in its final stages, with financial bids set to be opened on July 14. Authorities are also evaluating a revised design that would reduce the building’s covered area while increasing the height of the main exhibition hall to improve functionality.

During the meeting, the CDA Board also reviewed a proposal to revive a stalled residential sector through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Relevant departments were directed to conduct further technical and financial assessments before the proposal is presented for final approval.

In addition, the board discussed a proposed agreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) under which the PCB would upgrade CDA sports grounds in exchange for the use of the facilities for cricket tournaments. The proposal has been referred for further legal and financial review before a final decision is made.
