Construction of New Airport Facility in Gilgit on Cards
According to news accounts, Federal Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan recently indicated that discussions regarding the construction of a new airport facility in Gilgit are currently underway. According to the minister, a plan to expand the existing Gilgit airport was also being explored.

The aviation minister said that a feasibility study for the construction of a bridge to enable the landing of large aircraft at the Gilgit airport is under ongoing. In addition, the minister informed the media that Skardu Airport will now offer international flights in an effort to boost tourism and business in Gilgit Baltistan.
The minister stated that nighttime and all-weather flights will be available at the Skardu airport, and that many flights from Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Islamabad had already been inaugurated to the region.

Skardu airfield, situated at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters, is among the world’s highest altitude airports, but is gradually becoming one of the country’s busiest.
Next month, Skardu airport will be designated an international airport, and its runway will be extended to handle wide-body planes.
