Fata-KP Merger Blamed for Rising Incidents of Land Disputes
Khyber: Haji Bismillah Khan, the chairman of the Khyber Qaumi Jirga (KQJ), has expressed great concern over the increase in armed skirmishes involving property disputes and has labeled them as a result of the defective strategy of the former Fata’s merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing a meet the press event on Sunday at the Landi Kotal Press Club, he said that the Khyber tribal district had a dramatic rise in property disputes that also resulted in local deaths due to a lack of appropriate land and income records.
He claimed that the ill-advised merger exposed tribal residents who had been harmed by insurgency to more dangerous land and boundary disputes.
The KQJ chairman added that extension of the judicial system to tribal districts further aggravated the already difficult scenario as majority of the tribal people were uneducated about the court operations.
He continued by saying that because one side of a dispute would go to court while the other chose a tribal jirga, the courts would also be unable to function efficiently.

According to Mr. Khan, the police are likewise interested in securing land for their checkpoints by exerting undue pressure on owners rather than pressuring the local government to create an organized and systematic land revenue record.
