Google has officially upgraded its AI Overviews to be powered by Gemini 2.0, promising faster and more accurate responses, especially for complex queries such as coding, advanced mathematics, and multimodal searches. This move is part of Google’s ongoing effort to integrate AI deeper into its search ecosystem.

AI Overviews Now Reach More Users

Previously, users could bypass AI Overviews by searching while logged out of their Google accounts. However, Google has now expanded AI Overviews to teens and logged-out users, effectively removing this workaround. This means that a larger portion of search users will now interact with AI Overviews, whether they choose to or not.

Google claims that over a billion people are already using AI Overviews, though this is largely due to its automatic integration into search results rather than voluntary adoption.

Introducing AI Mode: A New Search Experience

In addition to AI Overviews, Google has launched AI Mode, an experimental opt-in feature available through Search Labs. AI Mode enhances search capabilities with advanced reasoning, comparisons, and multimodal processing, making it easier to ask complex questions and refine search queries.

Key features of AI Mode include:

  • Deeper exploration of topics with follow-up capabilities
  • Advanced comparisons and reasoning
  • Multimodal search (text, images, and other formats combined)
  • Curated web links for additional insights

Currently, AI Mode is exclusively available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, with a broader rollout expected in the near future.

What’s Next for AI in Search?

Google plans to enhance AI-powered responses with richer visuals, videos, and improved formatting to create a more engaging experience. However, the company acknowledges that AI-generated responses may still contain biases or opinion-based information, meaning users should verify details through multiple searches.

With AI becoming a more dominant force in Google Search, the shift raises concerns about accuracy, reliability, and transparency. As real-world testing continues, it remains to be seen how users will adapt to these AI-driven changes.
