The federal government has decided to discontinue fuel subsidies previously provided to motorcyclists, public transport operators, freight transport services, and farmers.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Steering Committee on fuel subsidies, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
The committee approved the withdrawal of subsidies across multiple categories, including motorcycles, rickshaws, small farmers, public transport, and goods transport sectors.
It was noted that global fuel prices have declined significantly, and the benefit of lower international rates has already been passed on to consumers. The committee further agreed to end the subsidy program with the approval of the Prime Minister.
Previously, motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, and owners of small vehicles (up to 800cc) were receiving fuel subsidies ranging from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 per litre.
Similarly, public and goods transport operators were receiving monthly support of Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 100,000 to help maintain lower fares, while small farmers were being provided a diesel subsidy of Rs. 100 per litre.
