Government is Urged to Increase Duty by 30 Percent on Tobacco

Syed Anis Bilal, team leader at the Human Development Foundation, stated that as a result of an increase in the exchange rate against the dollar, the costs of all basic commodities rose. The cost of cigarette products has remained unchanged. He stated that civic society is worried as to why a commodity that destroys lives is not heavily taxed.

Over 22 million adult Pakistanis, or 19% of the population, use tobacco products. About 32.4% of males and 5.7% of women in Pakistan use tobacco products.

Tobacco control activists exerted pressure on the government to increase FED on tobacco products. At least a 30% increase in FED should be levied on each cigarette slab in order to limit consumption and enhance tax collection.

There are two tax brackets for cigarettes: cigarettes that retail for less than Rs 90 will be taxed Rs 33, and cigarettes that retail for Rs 90 or more will be taxed Rs 90 or more.
